Stress is a very misunderstood element in
people’s lives. We all believe we know what
stress is and have been informed it is bad for us.
We all need stress to carry out everyday tasks
but it is the prolonged exposure to stress which
is bad. Stress can be caused by physical or
psychological means - it is the body's reaction to
external influences - and that reaction can be
learned.

The human race is so diverse, that not all people
have the same reaction to the same
circumstances. Take, for instance, a person
quite happy to jump off a high platform attached
to a bungee - to most people this would cause great stress - but not to the person on the end of the elastic lifeline.

Prolonged exposure to stress can, and does, break down the immune system. How many times have people
suffered from a cold or flu when they have been exposed to stress? Stress is one of the three big killers, alongside
being overweight and smoking. If a person is overweight and a stressed out smoker they need to seek out
assistance immediately. I did mention earlier that  a person's reaction can be learned and, therefore, the good
news is if it is learned then a person can learn other ways of coping with stress - in a more positive way.

We live in modern times when stress does not serve us well. We are bound by man made laws that create rise to
more stress. Looking at the cartoon above you will recognise the caveman has the best deal in relation to stress.
When confronted with danger his stress alerts his body to the situation and makes automatic adjustments needed
to fight or take flight. When the danger has passed his body is able to wind down.

Compare him to the chap stressed out by his boss and the amount of work commitments he has to meet, his
stress will continue for another nine hours. He may not be able to unwind even when he arrives home because he
is constantly thinking about the work he has left behind, at the office.
The cartoon, right, depicts how sometimes our
reactions to situations may be out of proportion.
When this occurs our perception or reaction to the
circumstances are wrong. As mentioned previously
among the pages if the reaction is excessive and
causes distress or affects the way a person
functions the treatment is required.DeltaTherapy is
the ideal way to change a persons behaviour,
thoughts or perception.
